About Spoodles

What is a Spoodle?
A spoodle is a loving, people-focused dog who thrives on attention and family activities. They are low to non-shedding, making them a wonderful choice for families and individuals who prefer a companion that is allergy-friendly and doesn’t leave hair throughout the home.
Spoodle puppies combine the intelligence of the poodle with the outgoing, devoted nature of the cocker spaniel. A first-generation spoodle is the result of crossing a purebred Cocker Spaniel with a purebred Miniature Poodle.
Appearance
While appearance can vary depending on which parent a puppy takes after, most spoodles share some common traits.
-
Coat: May be curly or feathered, semi-longhaired, often low to non-shedding.
-
Size: Medium-sized, 35–40 cm tall and 10–15 kg fully grown.
-
Build: Strong body with a rounded head, balanced muzzle, and long, soft ears set high and hanging below the chin.
-
Tail: Long and feathered, often carried proudly.
At Macedon Ranges Spoodles, our focus is always on temperament first—breeding for loving, well-adjusted companions rather than a specific “look.”
Temperament
Spoodles are affectionate, intelligent, and eager to please. Because both the poodle and cocker spaniel are people-oriented breeds, spoodles have a double dose of devotion. They love being involved in family activities and do best when treated as a true member of the household.
Grooming
Spoodles require regular grooming to keep their coats healthy:
-
Brush and comb regularly to prevent tangles.
-
Clip as needed (frequency depends on coat length).
-
Dry ears thoroughly after baths to avoid infections.
-
Start grooming routines early so your puppy learns to enjoy the process.
Health
Spoodles benefit from hybrid vigour, which can reduce the risk of certain hereditary conditions. However, like many long-eared breeds, they need special attention to:
-
Ears: prone to infections if not kept clean and dry.
-
Eyes: may experience weeping and should be monitored.
Spoodles can also be affected by Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), a genetic eye disease. To ensure healthy puppies, all of our breeding dogs are DNA-tested so none of our puppies will ever be affected by PRA. Read more about PRA.
Life span
Spoodles typically live 12–15 years, offering many years of companionship.
Space & exercise
Medium in size and adaptable, spoodles do well in an average backyard. They have lots of energy and need daily exercise, such as walks and playtime, to stay happy and healthy.
